Preface
The work presented in this thesis has been carried out during 2003-2004 at the Division of
Structural Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. It has constituted part of a project
for the Swedish National Road Administration named “Evaluation of the load carrying capacity
with refined analysis methods, especially of freivorbau bridges”, a cooperation between Lund
Institute of Technology, Chalmers University of Technology and Luleå University of Technol-
ogy. The work has also constituted part of a project named “Effective infrastructure in the
North Calotte and the Barents Regions” a co-operation between Norut Teknologi AS, Narvik,
Rovaniemi Polytechnic and Luleå University of Technology. This project was partly European
Union financed from INTERREG III A Nord program. The work contributes also to “Sustain-
able bridges”, an integrated European Project in Framework Program 6, which was initiated by
Luleå University of Technology.
Complementary funding has been received from the Nordic Road Association - The Finnish
section which granted a scholarship to me and made it possible plete the thesis.
