Introduction
He asked me what I was doing. I said I was writing a book.
"Great!" he said. "What's it about? "
Without thinking, I replied, "Neuro-Linguistic Programming. "

Joseph O'Connor and John Seymour used this very suitable passage in the
introduction of their book on the practice of basic Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP
(the abbreviation for the tongue-twisting full name) techniques. I included it here
because even at the outset of my endeavor, I can see their point. I am going to tell you
here what it is I hope to do with this Division III paper you're about to read.
When I was still in junior high school, my older brother Billy left our home and
went to California to college. He returned when I was in high school. I had begun to
grow up, and as I grew up, my father and I had grown more distant. Both my younger
sister and I had e used to being yelled at, and I was very depressed, having a
