Allraet--The coupling of a numerically intensive model of a silicon solar cell with an optimization
algorithm is developed. It is demonstrated that putational burden of evaluating the optimal design
of a solar cell can be significantly decreased if the model is appropriately adapted for use in an optimization
environment. It is shown that the resulting tool is extremely useful for performing a systematic analysis
of optimal efl~ciencies and associated optimal designs under different levels of technology and fabrication
processes. The paper also demonstrates that true sensitivity analyses can be carried out only in an
optimization context.
