Abstract

Language is a reflection of thought pattern. Thought pattern determines how a
language expresses meanings. Therefore, thought pattern difference (TPD) is a critical
factor which causes the difference of language expressions. The thought pattern of
English is abstract, analytic, linear, and objective, while the thought pattern of Chinese is
imagic, synthetic, spiral and subjective. This fact causes differences at lexical, syntactical
and text structural levels in language expressions. Consequently, the transformation
between the two languages is unavoidable from that difference. Interpretation is an
approach of language translating, which has its own pared to translation.
Interpretation is much more than a transformation between characters and words. It is a
communication-oriented and meaning conveying-targeted transformation between
languages and even cultures in a certain context. Therefore, interpretation quality is
evaluated with its own standard. In the course of interpretation, an influence of thought
pattern difference is obvious.
A flashback is made in the thesis about the relationship between thought pattern
difference (TPD) and the expression of language, and the standard of interpretation
quality. The research method in this thesis is bination of analyzing case of
interpretation and researching text material of interpretation. Then, the relationship
between thought pattern difference (TPD) and interpretation quality is discussed. With an
introduction to English and Chinese thought patterns on expressions of each language, an
analysis of the effect of thought pattern difference on interpretation quality is made at

lexical, syntactical, and text structural levels. Accordingly, thought pattern difference as a
significant factor which influences interpretation quality is put forward in the thesis.
