Totem
The "totem" comes from the Indian word totem, which is derived(导出) from the north American Argonauts(北美阿尔贡金人)dialect ototeman, meaning "its relatives," "its mark," and "his clan," the equivalent of an entire tribe(部落). The Chinese transliteration of the word was first used by Yan Fu in 1903 when he translated into English Mark Shanks's book the common passage of society《社会通诠》. In his translation, he not only followed the transliteration method, but also integrated(集合,兼容) the mysterious meaning of the word, so he finally translated the English "totem" into "图腾".

That is to say, in the eyes of primitive(原始的) man, totem is no longer the original animal or plant in nature, but is the object of worship personified. Therefore, some scholars put forward such a statement: totem worship is not the worship of animals and plants, but the worship of ancestors. For this reason, many tribes, clans, families and other organizations have named their totems and adopted totems as their marks.
