Unit 1 Preface
1. What is translation?
Different definitions of translation.
The term translation itself has several meanings: it can refer to the general subject field, the product or the process.(Munday,00)
An incredible broad notion which can be understood in many different ways. For example, one may talk of translation as a process or a product, and identify such sub-types as literary translation, technical translation, subtitling and machine translation; more over , while more typically it just refers to the transfer of written texts, the term sometimes also includes INTERPRETING. (Shuttleworth,97)
A number of scholars have also suggested further distinctions between different types of translation, ., “covert vs. overt translation”(House:1977), “communicative and semantic translation”(Newmark:1988), Domesticating and Foreignizing Translation”(Venuti:1995).
“Translation is frequently characterized metaphorically, and has --amongst many other things – pared to playing a game or a map.” Each of these analogies, however, is only intended to capture one particular facet of translation.”
Catford defines translation as “the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL).” Catford further explained that: “In translation, there is substitution of TL meanings for SL meanings: not transference of TL meanings into the SL. In transference there is an implantation of SL meanings into the TL text. These two processes must be clearly differentiated in any theory of translation.” . Catford, A Linguistic Theory of Translation London: Oxford University Press,196
