二、 Historical Background and Development of TCM
(1)ThehistoricalbackgroundofTraditionalChineseMedicine(TCM),,however,ismostnotablymarkedbytheWarringStatesperiod(475-221BCE)andthesubsequentHanDynasty(206BCE-220CE).Duringthistime,thefoundationaltextsofTCMwerecompiled,includingthe"YellowEmperor'sClassicofInternalMedicine"(Neijing),,oftenconsideredthecornerstoneofTCM,outlinedtheprinciplesofYinandYang,thefiveelements,andthemeridiansystem,"MateriaMedica,"acomprehensiveguidetoChineseherbs.
(2)TheevolutionofTCMcontinuedthroughthesubsequentdynasties,(618-907CE)witnessedthecodificationofTCMintotheimperialmedicalsystem,whichwasfurtherdevelopedduringtheSongDynasty(960-1279CE).TheSongperiodwasparticularlysignificantfortheadvancementofpharmacology,withthecompilationofthe"GreatCompendiumofAcupunctureandMateriaMedica"(DaMingNiandanshu).Thisworkprovideddetaileddescriptionsofherbs,theirproperties,andtheirtherapeuticuses,(1271-1368CE)sawtheintegrationofMongolianmedicalpracticesintoTCM,whiletheMingDynasty(1368-1644CE)wasmarkedbythepublicationofthe"CompendiumofMateriaMedica"(BencaoGangmu),(1644-1912CE)wascharacterizedbythefurtherintegrationofTCMwithWesternmedicine,leadingtothedevelopmentofmodernChinesemedicine.
