1. Foreword
Windows Phone officially launched in China as late as March 2012. However, China has what’s
probably the most advanced black market system on this , it’s accessible to average
consumers with no legal risk. Since as early as October 2010, Windows Phone devices have been
smuggled into China in trickles from a plethora of source countries.
As to how exactly Windows Phone is doing in China right now, no one has a clear idea. Yes
Microsoft has one, of course, but pany doesn’t quite want to share facts and figures with
anyone else soon. Aside from that, people could try to chart the Windows Phone water with
statistics from developers, though a handful of apps from one independent developer won’t be
sufficient to illuminate the entire room. Therefore this report has posed, to illustrate
the current scale and trend of Windows Phone mobile operating system in the Chinese market
with a sophisticated and more convincing data source.
This report is based on server data consolidated from 112 games and apps hosted on the
OpenXLive service, covering far more ground than probably any single game/app out there. It
should be made clear that despite a better data source, this report CANNOT answer questions
such as “How many Windows Phone exactly are there in China right now?” or “How many
Windows Phone devices has Nokia sold in China thus far into 2012?” Only Microsoft could
answer those. Instead, we are trying to just depict trends and tendencies of the Chinese market
through this document.
There are users from other countries mixed in OpenXLive statistics, and they do bring potential
uracy to the data set for its purpose. However, considering the fact that most of the 112
games/apps are either entirely in Chinese, or rank especially high in the Chinese Marketplace,
