Abstract : The existing outlier detection methods in variance-cova ria ponent estima tion ( VCE) a re ba sed on
the residuals. However, the essential inputs of VCE are the second-order values of residuals a nd, thus it is more
rea sona ble to ca rry out the outlier detection using these second-order values directly. In this paper, sta rting with
the fundament VCE equations ba sed on equivalent residua ls with standard norma l distribution, we propose a new

method to detect the outliers of VCE inputs where the ch-i square ( V ) and normal product ( N p ) statistics are used
to test the residual squa res and their products for one another with a given confidence proba bility, respectively.
