美国总统就职演说辞的语篇分析——一项基于系统功能语法的

摘要

如今,虽然很多语言学家对美国总统就职演说辞进行了广泛的研究,但是到
目前为止对于美国总统就职演说辞的研究仍然是一个很新的领域。因此,本文试
图从系统功能语法的角度对最近的 11 篇美国总统就职演说辞进行语篇分析。
以往的国内外的语言学家已经对就职演说辞进行过不少的分析,并在不同的
角度取得了一定的成就,但他们却往往采用定性分析的方法概括总结各英语变体
的语音、词汇、句法、语篇及修辞等各语言表层的特征。本文在前人研究的基础
上,通过定性分析与定量分析相结合的方式,从元功能的三个角度概念功能,人
际功能和语篇功能对文本进行分析,总结出其就职演说的文体特点。
通过研究发现,总统演说中主要以物质过程为主,然后是关系过程和心理过
程;其次,总统为了更好的表达自己的思想,所以在语气方面绝大多数使用陈述
语气,较少使用祈使和疑问语气;在主位推进模式方面,总统为了使自己的演讲
更加连贯,更易于美国民众理解,所以他们多会选择主位同一型的推进模式用于
他们的演讲辞中,但是为了避免单调,富于变化,也会穿插一些其它的主位推进
模式,比如延续型,分裂型或集中型。
本论文通过定性分析与定量分析相结合的方式,通过系统功能语法的元语言
功能理论框架以期得出就职演说辞的语言特征,通过分析元语言功能实现的语言
手段,以使听者更容易理解演说者的用意。此分析不仅能促进大学英语阅读和写
作的教学,而且还能有助于提高演讲爱好者运用演讲语言的技能。本论文不仅扩
展了对就职演说领域的研究,同时对公开演讲的研究有一定的启示意义。

Abstract

In recent years, the scholars have been increasingly paying much attention to the
American presidential inaugural address. However, the study on inaugural address is
still a relatively new domain in modern linguistic researches. Thus, the thesis aims at
analyzing the features of language in the inaugural address within the framework of
Systemic-Functional Grammar.
Distinguished with other scholars who have performed the studies in a
qualitative way, this study has employed a quantitative and qualitative research
methodology, which includes the analysis of the latest 11 presidential inaugural
addresses. All the texts will be analyzed from the perspectives of transitivity system,
mood and modality, and thematic progression. Reliability and validity issues were
identified and addressed.
The main findings of the thesis are as follows:
From the perspective of ideational function, all the six process types occurred in
the inaugural addresses, and the material process has an obvious predominance among
them. The relational process ranks the second, while the mental process the third.
