Abstract
Abstract
Academic book review, as an important part of book review, plays an irreplaceable role
in mending the academic works and promoting the academic development. In recent
years, more and more scholars start to analyze academic book review with different theories
like systematic functional approach, theory of genre analysis and pragmatic approach etc.
However, studies on academic book review from Brown and Levinson’s Face Theory are
relatively few, especially the analysis of politeness strategies in saving the face of both the
book authors and the general readers. Therefore, this thesis tries to explore the politeness
strategies in English and Chinese academic book reviews that save both the book authors’ and
the general readers’ face by adopting Brown and Levinson’s Face Theory.
Based on Brown and Levinson’s Face Theory, the paper studies the use of politeness
strategies in 30 English academic book reviews and 30 Chinese ones through qualitative and
quantitative research, which aims at answering the questions: (1) What politeness strategies
do the English and Chinese academic book reviewers use in their reviews? (2) What are the
similarities and differences of the politeness strategies used in their reviews? (3) What are the
cultural factors contributing to the similarities and differences?
