Task 3: M ozart
Mozart was a fa sc in a tin g musician and composer whose fame continues to grow more
than two ce n tu rie s a fte r h is death. He was born in Salzburg, Austria, in 1 756. Before the
age of four, he had shown great musical talent. His father then decided to let him start taking
harpsichord lessons. The boy's rep u ta tio n as a musical ta le n t grew fa s t. At fiv e, he was
composing music. Form th at time on, Mozart was performing n concerts and w riting music.
By h is early teens, he had mastered the piano, v io lin and harpsichord, and was w riting
symphonies and operas. His f i r s t major opera was performed in Milan in 1 770, when
he was only fourteen. At fifte e n , Mozart became the conductor fo r an o rch estra in
Salzburg. In 1 781 , he le f t for Vienna, where he was in g reat demand as both a performer
and a composition teacher. His f i r s t opera was a success. But l if e was not easy
because he was a poor businessman, and h is finances were always in a bad s ta te . His
music from the next decade was not very popular, and he eventually f e l l back on his
teaching jobs fo r a 1 iving. In 1 788 he stopped performing in pub! ic, preferring only
to compose. He died in 1 791 a t the age of th ir ty - f iv e . Although he lived only a short
lif e , he composed over 600 works.
